//z-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/onejs?MarketPlace=USThe first thing to note is that using a black matte primer (vs. a gloss, never use a gloss primer!!!) was all the difference! It does almost all of the work in prepping the model and leaves you free to focus on picking out the details in different colors.

I decided to hand paint the parchment script, rather than use the Micron pen that I usually have for such a task. It proved to be a fun challenge, keeping the lines straight, and I would suggest that if you are a newer painter or just not comfortable painting small squiggly lines of script, to use a Micron .005 black pen, it will really save you a lot of time and headache!

As for the rest of the mini, here are the colors I used:

Rakarth Flesh – Bone Mask, Ribcage, Parchment Bits and Robe Lining

Leadbelcher – Bolter Bits, Crozius, Chain, Neck Coils, Belt Buckle, Backpack Vents

Retributor Armor – Spikey Bit around the Crozius, Kneepad Skull, Iron Halo, Chest Logo, Hanging Totems, Shoulder Pad Rims, Skull Shaped Buttons on Robe

Screamer Pink – Crozius Handle

Khorne Red – Pistol Casing, Eye Lenses, Purity Seals, Book Cover

Mournfang Brown – Belt and Pouches

Wash it all with Nuln Oil and re-highlight with base colors.

Highlight the black areas with Eshin Grey, Dawnstone, and Administratum Grey.

One of the easier models to base because of the predominant black areas, so you can really go to town on the highlights and blending.

Here comes the man in black

Video review

Post YouTube video observations:

  • You don’t need to ONLY use the Chaplain section of the transfer sheet for your Chaplain and nothing else. It’s two Ultramarine symbols, a Roman numeral 2, 4, a red skull (which can symbolize a veteran), and two Aquilas. Nothing is exclusively Chaplain-related.
  • His hanging nipple parchments (I don’t know what else to call them) are going to be so much fun to freehand. The artist who did the studio model really seemed to have fun with it, and I can’t wait to do it, myself.
  • I remember the crazius arcanum used to be described as a small rod with an Aquila at the end! This opens up the floodgates to simply convert your own chaplains by taking any long handled hand weapon (say, an axe), chopping off the head and replacing it with a skull bit! Hmmmm…potential future chop shop video?

“Let’s go…THATAWAY!!!”

Video review

This one really isn’t too terrible. The thing you have to consider with these minis is how much will you be using what’s on the figure? Unless you’re going to convert your optimal loadout, you’ll be playing with a Bolter/power sword and an iron halo when you put this guy on the table.

Not really a dealbreaker, just something to think about. Besides, completionists who want to collect all of the Primaris figures don’t really have too much to grumble about, as this guy does look pretty cool.

Captains holding aloft a sword and leading the charge are iconic of the romantic depiction of war in art throughout the centuries. You see this pose in paintings, in movies, on sculptures, and of course, in your Miniatures.

Celebrating 30 years of Grimdark!

Video review

I really like this mini.

Was it necessary? No!

Am I glad that it was made? Yes!

What else would you have had them release for the 30th anniversary of Warhammer 40k?

An exclusive Chaos Space Marine? A super kitted out Ork warboss? Maybe a special edition Commissar Cain???

Nope! We’re riding this Primaris train til the wheels fall off, baby!

Seriously, I dig it. The audacity of dropping a special edition figure that looks like every other Primaris figure is just so GW, I can’t be mad at them!

If only it was in Finecast…

Primaris Apothecary Review

The doctor is in!

There is something so great about this miniature. As a painter and hobbyist I really am looking forward to painting him up! The sculpt is gorgeous, I really dig the needle gum, and the pose tells an intriguing little narrative. Like a mini diorama, we see the Apothecary standing over a fallen marine whom he has just ‘harvested’, taking the gene seed from his fallen brother.

Stuff like that is so much more interesting than just having a model standing with legs spread, possibly standing on a rock or Orc/Chaos Marine skull, holding up a sword and screaming.

Kudos on this one, GW!

Space Marine Primaris Librarian Review

Read a book, get swole!

I love the bits and bobs hanging off of this guy. I wonder why they gave him the robes, though. Didn’t mention this in my video review, but the chance to paint a blue armored character in an army where the rest of your troops could be painted in a completely different color, (Salamanders, for example), why would you hide so much of the armor? His legs are almost completely covered, and the upper body is obscured from the sides and the back by the long robes.

As a painter, this means you get less blue armor to paint, but a much bigger canvas to work in with the robes, itself. There is a lot of area for freehand work, and will give any painter a chance to work on some smooth blending on all the cloth surface.
